First golf course in Arizona was introduced in 1899 at The Phoenix Golf Club. The fairways and greens were dirt and the players used a special broom-line device to sweep the green before putting.
1910- W.J. Murphy opens Ingleside Golf club and is only Scottsdale Golf Course until after World War I.
1923- Arizona Golf Association is formed due to the influx of Mid-Westerners coming to the Salt River Valley (now nicknamed the valley of the sun)
1932- Phoenix opens first public course , Ecanto Park
1932- Phoenix Open is formed and played at Arizona Country Club
“Back East” design with lush fairways and greens becomes norm for phoenix until 1962, where the desert is incorporated into Desert Forest Golf Club by the airport in Carefree. (a true hidden gem that I have played a half-dozen times!)
Jack Nicklaus designs Desert Highlands Golf Course, which was “out there” according to some great golfers I have spoken with!
1960’s, Karsten Solheim benchmarks Arizona’s golf history with his PING putter. To this day, they will adjust any Ping club for Free. You can even take a tour of the facility. I recommend any golfer interested in history to do so. Their fitting center is still a very simple, Old-School building that can’t be more than 3000 sq.ft.
1990 Dana Garmany Launches Troon Golf, a world-class organization here in Scottsdale
Sundown Ranch Golf Course opens in Scottsdale in 1953. Still the Longest running golf course in Scottsdale. Name changed to Scottsdale Country Club and now known as Starfire at Scottsdale Club.
2010-Waste Management takes over the FBR Open and draws nearly ½ million visitors, making history for the most attended Golf Event on PGA
